Quebec Winters and Your Pavers

Pavers are built for harsh winters, but a few simple precautions keep them in top shape for decades.

Snow Removal

Raise the plow/snowblower blade 1 cm above the surface, use rubber shoes on metal blades, clear regularly, vary push direction to avoid shifting perimeter pavers.

Salt and De-Icers

Rock salt is the #1 enemy of pavers. Prefer calcium chloride, natural abrasives, calcium-magnesium acetate or urea. Apply pre-storm when possible.

Polymeric Sand Joints

Refill joints before winter, apply sealer, fix drainage, top up in spring.

Frost Heaving

Natural in Quebec. A proper 12–18" excavated base minimizes it. Shaded zones thaw slower — watch gutters spilling near pavers. If pavers stay heaved after thaw: pull, adjust bedding, reinstall, refill polymeric sand.

Spring Cleanup

Inspect, clean (max 1500 PSI), repair, re-seal if 2+ years old, fix drainage.

Fall Checklist

Deep clean, refill joints, seal if needed, check edging, redirect gutters, trim plants, inspect patio and fences for winter.
