How to Choose the Right Interlocking Pavers for Quebec's Climate

May 20, 20252 min readGroupe Altia

Thickness Means Durability

For a driveway, choose pavers that are at least 60 mm thick. For a pedestrian patio, 50 mm is sufficient. Thicker pavers better withstand loads and freeze-thaw cycles.

Techo-Bloc vs Permacon

Both manufacturers offer excellent products. Techo-Bloc stands out with its modern textured finishes, while Permacon offers excellent value with proven classics.

Color: Think Long-Term

Dark colors (charcoal, graphite) are trendy, but show salt residue more in the spring. Natural shades (sand, beige) age better and require less visual maintenance. That said, color is a personal choice — don't hesitate to pick what you want for your project.

The Base: The Invisible but Crucial Element

Poorly installed pavers show their flaws within 2-3 years in our Quebec winters. The base must include:

  • 12 to 18 inches of crushed stone (0-3/4 or ½ clear) compacted in layers
  • 1 inch of bedding sand leveled with rails
  • Geotextile at the bottom to separate the stone from the natural soil

This foundation work requires careful excavation — no shortcuts, no guesswork.

Annual Maintenance

Clean in spring with a stiff broom. Apply a sealant every 2-3 years to protect the color and simplify care.
