The Ideal Window
Quebec's sod season runs May to mid-October, but not all periods are equal. Timing directly affects rooting and long-term survival.
Spring (May to mid-June): Most Popular
Mild temperatures, frequent rain, moist soil after snowmelt, long growing season ahead. Drawbacks: high demand, possibly wet early-May soil, higher peak-season prices. Book your landscaper in February–March, especially if bundling sod with pavers, a patio or fencing.
Summer (mid-June to mid-August): Possible but Demanding
Heat stresses fresh sod. Water 2-3x/day during heat waves, early morning and late afternoon. Avoid midday sun. Municipal watering restrictions may apply.
Fall (September to mid-October): Best-Kept Secret
Cool temps, morning dew, less competition, lower prices, roots keep growing until frozen ground, fewer weeds. Install by mid-October in Greater Montreal (earlier in the Laurentides/Lanaudière). Allow 3–4 weeks before first frost. Apply a potassium-rich fall fertilizer.
Ideal Conditions
- Soil temp ≥ 10 °C
- Air temp 15–25 °C
- No nightly frost within 3 weeks after install
- Avoid multi-day heat waves 30 °C+
Signs It's Too Late
First frost within 3 weeks, night temps often under 5 °C, frozen surface soil, snow forecast.
Planning
- Feb–March: quotes and booking
- April: site prep (fences, patio adjustments)
- May–mid-June: prime installation window
- Mid-June–mid-Aug: possible with intensive watering
- Sept–mid-Oct: excellent alternative
- Nov–April: plan next season
