Watering: The Key to Success
The first two to three weeks after installation are critical. Water your sod every day for 30 to 45 minutes, ideally early in the morning. This must be done a minimum of twice per day, aiming for at least 1h45 of watering per day. The soil must remain moist at all times, but without creating puddles. Heavy rainfall of the same amount replaces a watering session.
We recommend buying a long garden hose that lets you water multiple zones simultaneously. Buying a smart timer is also a good idea. Combining these makes scheduling the critical first waterings much easier.
After three weeks, gradually reduce to every other day, then to 2-3 times per week depending on the weather.
The First Mow
Wait at least 2 to 3 weeks before the first mow. The grass should have reached approximately 8-10 cm. Cut at the maximum blade height of your mower. Never cut lower than that on the first mow.
Fertilization
Apply a starter fertilizer (rich in phosphorus) approximately 4 to 6 weeks after installation. It helps the lawn but is not mandatory. Avoid fast-acting fertilizers that could burn the young roots.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Walking on the sod before rooting (first 2-3 weeks). You can still walk on it to water or reach your shed, but be careful not to move the rolls. If they shift, simply push them back so they stay tight against each other.
- Watering in the evening (promotes fungal diseases)
- Mowing too short (stresses the lawn and encourages weeds)
- Neglecting watering during heat waves
